Alcona Students and Families, In celebration of Earth Day and recognition of the importance of sustainable practices, Alcona’s environmental science students are organizing a special fundraiser aimed at raising awareness about the environmental impact of fast fashion, while also providing support to fellow students. We hope that, with this clothing drive, we can address both social and environmental challenges in a meaningful way. Here's how you can participate and make a difference: Donation Drive: During the week before Earth Day Monday, April 15th- Friday, April 19th.  we will be hosting a clothing donation drive at Alcona High School. Students will be encouraged to bring in gently used clothing items to either Ms. Luce’s classroom (307) or Mrs. Ortiz’s classroom (211). With these donations, the students enrolled in Alcona’s Environmental Science classes will open a “little shop” on Earth Day, allowing Alcona students to receive gently used fashion for free.  Raffle Fundraiser: To incentivize student participation and collect clothing for our FREE “little shop”, we will be organizing a raffle with exciting prizes. Students will receive a raffle ticket for their donations.  Awareness Campaign: Throughout the event, students will be facilitating discussions and activities focused on the environmental impact of fast fashion and the importance of donating clothing to reduce waste and promote sustainability. This is an opportunity for students to learn and engage with these critical issues firsthand. Students and parents, please consider donating to be part of our amazing Earth Day Celebration. We would appreciate everyone's involvement.  Kindly, Alcona High School Environmental Science Students

Youth Advisory Councils (or YACs) connect our students to their community through giving, service, and leadership. Our local Alcona YAC awards grants to projects that affect, influence, and ultimately make a better world for the youth in our community. Now it's time to give back! For 24 hours, on May 7, 2024, our community's Youth Advisory Council (YAC) will be represented on the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan's (CFNEM) website: https://www.cfnem.org/youth-advisory-councils/yac-day-2024.html Donors and supporters of our YAC will be able to easily make a gift online to support our group. Not only will your donation help raise funds for current and future generations of youth philanthropists, but it may also help our YAC win the coveted "Mac the Golden Yak"! Please consider donating on May 7th!

Last month the Alcona Animal Clinic hosted a talent tour for 5 juniors and seniors, focusing on career opportunities related to Veterinary Services. Dr. Kathy Jo Schwartz, the clinic's founder, led the tour, introducing her staff and showcasing the various aspects of the clinic's operations. Students saw how animals are checked in, examined, and treated for different conditions. They observed procedures such as x-rays and teeth cleanings, while also learning about the equipment and safety protocols involved. Thank you to the Alcona Animal Clinic and Michigan Works for making this possible! For more information see the Michigan Works Talent Tour article.

The Electric Tigers E-sports team took a victory yesterday against Belding High School for their last game of the Super Smash Brothers season. The Tigers, (4-4) ended their season in 76th place out of over 200 teams, but narrowly missed the playoffs. The Electric Tigers’ Rocket League team will be in action on Thursday teams for their final game of the regular season, hosting Byron Center High School. The Tigers have a 4-3 record in Rocket League and are currently in 31st place out of 108 teams in Michigan, with a playoff berth in the balance of the outcome of Thursday’s match. Lastly, our partnership with the Pied Piper school in Alpena has been very successful with numerous Alcona players pitching in to play Mario Kart in the Unified League. Our thanks to Adalai Liebler, Darren Boyat, Geni Kirk and Abel Birk for making that program work this spring for the youth at Pied Piper. #alconatigers #tigerpride #esports
