According to the MSU Community Evaluation Program, our community is considered a childcare desert. Through Alcona Community Schools’ Early College Program, students can start their path toward becoming a preschool teacher, teaching assistant, social worker, daycare provider, or even a childcare center director, all while still in high school! Thanks to our partnership with Bay Mills Community College, students can earn up to an associate degree at little to no cost, with certificate and degree programs available fully online. Students in Mr. Van Hines high school history class have been diving into the fascinating world of medieval times by designing their very own coats of arms! This project gave them a chance to explore history, symbolism, and creativity while learning how emblems were used to represent families, values, and traditions. Did you know that Alcona Schools also has its own coat of arms? In fact, we even have a blazon; which is a formal description of a coat of arms, flag, or similar emblem, from which someone could reconstruct an accurate image of it. What a great way for our students to connect with both history and school pride! #alconaschools
