Alcona Cross Country competed this morning in Boyne Falls at the 18th Annual Logger Invitational. Darren Boyat ran a time of 21:42, finishing 18th, while Cole Upper ran a 20:26 and finished 13th overall. Both boys earned medals. The next race is the first North Star League Meet of the season, which will be held in Hale on Tuesday, September 17.
The third class to inherit Alcona's rain garden study site at the Harrisville Harbor is the Alcona marine biology class. This project has been growing and developing since its inception. Three years ago, Alcona's environmental science students had the idea to implement a rain garden to filter pollutants before entering our beautiful Lake Huron, and a few years into the project, our native species planted long ago are thriving, filtering impurities, and beautifying our local harbor.
The project is in constant flux, and this year's class is ready with new ideas. During their field trip, students participated in a harbor tour, to get to know their study site, met community partners, maintained the garden, and worked in teams to test water quality (pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and turbidity).
We can not wait to see where this year's class takes this project, and we are happy to be off to a great start.

ACS has received a $10,000 grant from the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) to launch the Early College Recharge Program, expanding our existing Early College initiative. This program, supported by Alpena Community College (ACC) and Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union (AAACU), aims to strengthen the transition from high school to college through promoting a college-going culture, removing barriers to post-secondary education, and providing students with the tools and support they need to succeed. By starting the conversation about college early on, it helps students better understand their options, build confidence in navigating higher education pathways, and make informed decisions about their future academic and career goals.
